THE TEXAS HUNTER.
The ran was up the wind blew mild.
All nature see m'd to wear a smile
"When William with his pin rcpair'd
Towani the Rio San Bernard
In quest of pimp of swed or tlicht.
For hi; and Mark's meat that night.
l-nnj William toilM crc he could find
An object fit it was the hind
When back with eagerness In- drew
The cock and then pullM triiKer ton
When ere the smoke had clcar'd his ejes
His wish'd for dead deer did arise
To loading of his gnn acain
The anxious huntsman then brgan
'"But first his hall and patching drew
And this before he'dchare'd her too
When lest" said he " I lose some time
I think of it and now I'll prime."
The last manoeuvre was shut pan
Meanwhile the deer before him stands
"Oh now you're mine" said Willuam low
if my old gun don't snap nor blow;"
But when the dint and steel had cluh'd
What think you J William's gun it llash'd.
In haste our hunter had forgot
To put in powder or the shot
He sighted on an empty gun
Which nash'd anil then the deer did run ;
And Will rcturn'd to Mary's scat
Without a single piece of meat.
The story told amounts to this
As all my readers will insist
That William's powder patch and ball
Were not put in the gun at all
As if they suffcr'd much from drought
He'd plac'd the whole load in his mouth .
BENED1CITE DAUGHTER.
BY T. II. BAYt.EY ESQ..
The lady abbess was gone to her rest
And the nuns in their cells were lecing;
Save one who sick of so dull a nest
' Was over the battlement peeping ;
And under the convent she spied
A boat on the dimpliug water ;
And in it a youth who fondly cried
Come down Benedicitc Daughter."
8he threw him one end of a silken thread
And she kept fut hold of tin: other
"Be silent! "be silent! the trembling said
" Or you'll wake our Lady mother :"
6be drew up a ladder of ropes and micui
The youth in his stout arm caught her;
Away" he cried " by he light ol the moon
"Away! Benedicite Daughtce."
The Lady abbess awoke and she heard
A noise at the miduight hour ;
She counted her brood and missing a bird
She sought it in hall and tower;
The ladder she spied and down it she hied
But she tumbled into tho vs ater !
The bo it sailed off and the lovers cried
Farewell! Bcnedicitc Daughter."
RULES FOR MAKING GOOD BUTTER.
If yon have four or five cows it is best to chore
'everyday; and by no means less frequently than
every other day. If you cannot churn every day
throw into the cream when gathered a handful of
nice salt. In very warm weather when milk soon
soon put two heaping table .poonfuls of salt into I
every nail bf milk before straining. The quantity
as well as the quality of butter is greatly improved
by this method. If you have ice put a small piece
in every pan of milk and alto into the cream when'
you churn. If yon have no ice put the cream into
a pail and hang it in the well twelve hours before
churning. In the warm season croam should be
skimmed as soon as it is in the leust sour ami in the
couldcst weather milk should not stand more than
thirty-six or forty-eight hours. The utmost care
should be taken to keep every article used in making
