Farms In Bartlett
Area Being Improved
By S.C.S. Work
Improved farm conditions ill
the Bartlett camp area of the
Soil Conservation Service are be-
coming more and more apparent
in the "well dressed" appearance
of the land according to Mr.'R.
H. Goodnight Technician-in
Charge. . '
Many fields for the first time
last winter were clothed' in green
cover crops to protect the 591!
against winter rains.
With the approach of hot
weather summer strip crops of
sudan redtop cane hegariand
milo maize are taking over their
part of the job of erosion con-
trol and soil building as the de-
finitely planned cropping system'
evolves into a systematic rota-
tion Mr. Goodnight pointed out.
Broad strips are coming into
style in the vegetative covering
of the land as more and -more
farmers are adopting the prac-
tice of strip cropping' and plant-
ing strips of close-grawingcrons
between bands of clean-tilled land
to increase the effectiveness of
their rotations in protecting the
soil against erosion.
Properly built terraces wirid-
ino across cultivated fields;
broad meadow strips whichcon-.
duct the surplus terrace water
out of the fields and provide the
farmer with an additional crop
of hay ; well sodded outlet chan-
nels; and permanent hay crops
growing on the steeper slopes;
all'are'addfnsr ti tiKfr aSHS&fivb-
ness of the creneral appearance
of the land as well as protecting;
the soil against erosion.
City Health Officer

Dr. W J. Harlan city health

recent rains are causing a rapid
growth in vegetation and owners
of vacant lots are especially re-
quested to keep grass nnd weeds
cut since such places provide ex-
cellent breeding grounds for mos-
quitoes" Dr. Harjan stated.
Thfi importance of all homes in
the town being connected with

by the city health officer. Par
