One of the question* that has
come to our office the past week
was on how to set out a shade tree
—whether to blast out a large hole
or one just big enough for the
roots. Perhaps some of the rest of
you would like to have the answer
we gave. The better the soil prep-
aration for the tree, whether fruit
tree or shade tree, the better
chance it has to get a good start
and thus make a strong tree that
may survive.
Blast or dig out a nole some six
feet in diameter and as deep as
you feel like digging Then if pos-
sible fill this in with top soil. If
you can find an old barn lot or cor-
ral where there is a lot of dried out
barnyard manure, rotted straw,
and such like, then use all of that
you can get. The fertilizer will be
of some value but the best part will
be the organic matter Introduced
into the soil in this way Ttrra-llte
is a mineral product that has
proved most worthwhile for mak
ln« the soil more porous and im-
proving the water holding capacity.
A large feed sack full costs about
one dollar plus transportation, so
would be too expensive to use on a
large scale, but might be worth-
while for a small number of trees.
Trees should be set out in Decem-
ber or January, as early as possible
after the first few killing freezes,
so the soil should be prepared as
early as possible. Thorough prep-
aration will help Insure success.
