HISTORY OF TIHE
volunteers in the cause of Texas, is as creditable to
that cause as to those who thus sustained it, and is
enough to wipe off forever the vile aspersions which
have been lavished upon it.
Notwithstandirg the reasons which have been mentioned
for a Declaration of Independence, the popular
mind in Texas was not yet prepared for that measure, but
disposed rather to abide by their oaths and the Constitution,
in the hope of some favorable change in Mexico.
It was, therefore, towards the close of the month
of December, resolved, with the sanction of the General
Council, to strike boldly at the Central Government,
and to carry the war beyond the Rio Grande.
This the Texans had resolved upon, with the expectation
of exciting the Liberals of Mexico to unite with
them in re-establishing, on Mexican soil, the banners of
Morales and Hidalgo. It was proposed first to attack
the enemy at Matamoras, and then, "(if Heaven de.
creed, wherever Tyranny should raise its malignant
form."
Accordingly, on the 1st of January, two hundred
volunteers left Bexar under Col. Grant, and proceeded
to Goliad. Their intention was to have marched from
this point to Matamoras; but the larger part of them,
losing confidence in their commander-having been
told his object was plunder-left him, and joined the
force at Golfad. Grant, with about fifty of his party,
who adhered to him, and about twenty men under Col.
Johnson, who subsequently joined him, proceeded on
the 20th inst. towards Matamoras, with the avowed
purpose of driving in horses and cattle. The result
was, that, having separated in two parties, and each
