peaceful avocations, in the hope of peace and security ?
They knew full well that the Government of Mexico
would not cower at its reverses; that it would make every
exertion to regain its laurels lost, to plant its standard
in the heart of Texas, and " punish the rebels. " What
possible consistent course, then, was left, but to declare
entire independence of Mexico, and "( fight it out ?"
Many of the more intelligent of the people now saw
this, the only alternative; and believing that the pro.
visional character of the existing Government was in.
adequate to the adoption of so responsible a measure,
they, and particularly Gen. Austin, recommended a
resort to the people anew, in the calling a General Con.
vention. In compliance with this advice, there was
passed by the Provisional Government, on the 10th of
December, an ordinance and decree for calling a Con.
vention.
Though darkness was now gathering in the West, yet
light was breaking in from the East upon the affairs of
Texas, and upon every gale was wafted the cheering
voice of friends and of brothers. Not only in Louis.
iana, but in Tennessee, in Alabama, in Georgia, and in
other States, volunteer companies had been enrolled
and money subscribed in aid of Texas. The chivalry
of the South and West was roused and impatient to
rush upon her plains. Already had the " New Orleans
Greys," and other volunteer companies from the States,
won immortal honor in the fall of Bexar. On the 17th
of November, the citizens of Nashville, Tennessee, had
convened, passed spirited resolutions, and opened a subscription
and a list for volunteers in aid of Texas; on
