HISTORY OF THE
CHAPTER VII.
THus had the Texans achieved a most important conquest,
and driven each hostile vagabond Mexican beyond
the Rio Grande.
On the 12th inst. Gen. Houston, appointed Major
General and Commander-in.Chief of the army of Texas,
issued his proclamation to the people.* Soon after,
having visited Refugio and Goliad, for the purpose particularly
of superintending the formation of a regiment
at the latter place under Col. Fannin, he departed on
furlough to Nacogdoches, to treat with Indians in that
neighborhood.
The General Council of the Provisional Government
in the mean time, since its organization on the 12th of
November, had exerted itself in a very creditable manner
to protect and sustain the country, and particular.
