INTRODUCTION.-TEXAS.
the great fertility of its soil, as the salubrity of its cli.
mate and the beauty of its scenery. Americans emigrated
to it to improve their condition, to get lands,
and eventually to amass wealth. They reclaimed it
from a wilderness and from the savage, and then
took the government of it into their own hands.
For this last act, they have been charged with merce.
nary views, and with ingratitude; and opprobrium
without measure has been heaped upon them. Their
motives and their acts have not been sufficiently known
nor understood. It is the principal object of the writer,
in the following work, faithfully and impartially to
exhibit the causes and narrate the interesting events of
the Revolution, which has placed Texas in the attitude
of an Independent Nation. That the reader may have
a better understanding of those causes and events, a
brief exposition will first be given of the objects the
Mexican Government had in view in allowing the
Colonization of Texas by North Americans, of the con.
ditions on which it was allowed, and also of the rights,
privileges, and encouragement of the Colonists.
The leading object of the Mexican Government in
allowing the Colonization of Texas, was undoubtedly
the protection of her frontiers from the hostile incursions
of the Indians. The Camanches and other tribes
had waged a constant and ruinous warfare against the
Spanish settlements at Bexar and Goliad, on the Western
limits of Texas, and had extended their ravages
