Jose Montano published his plan of a forcible reform
of the Government, in opposition to the Yorkinos.
In 1828, Gen. Bravo, Vice-President of the Republic,
declared for the rebels, and stationed himself at Tulancingo,
where he issued a manifesto in favor of Montano.
Gen. Vincente Guerrero took the field in favor of the
Government, and the result was, that Bravo and his
associates were banished the Republic. The two par.
ties were again arrayed against each other at the election
of a President in September, to succeed Victoria.
After an arduous contest, the Escoces candidate, Man.
uel Gomez Pedraza, was chosen by a majority of two
votes over Guerrero, the candidate of the Yorkinos.
Santa Anna, at the head of a body of troops, declared
this vote not an expression of the popular will, and pro.
claimed Guerrero President. Not at first successful, he
again took the field, assisted by Lobato and Zavala.
Finally, Guerrro himself appeared in arms. In De.
cember, civil war raged in all its horrors in Mexico.
The result, after much bloodshed, was the flight of Pe.
draza, who gave up his claims to the Presidency and
left the country.
Guerrero was elected to succeed Pedraza on the 6th
of January, 1829. Anastasio Bustamente was chosen
Vice-President, and Santa Anna Secretary of War.
On the 27th of July, an expedition of four thousand
men, fitted out at Havana to subjugate Mexico, landed
at Tampico. After a contest of two months, this force
