AFTER having been eight years in the
French service, by land and by sea, and
having had a hand shot off in Sicily by a
grenade, I resolved to return to France to
solicit employment. At that time the late

work, printed in Paris, 1697, entitled "Derniers
Decouvertes dans l'Amerique Septentrionale, de
M. de la Salle, par Chevalier Tonti, Gouverneur
du Fort St. Louis, aux Illinois, Paris, I697."
