NORFLEET
my mind I was making no mistake in the two men, the
waitress returned bearing a heavy tray of food. Had
there remained the slightest doubt about the identity of
the blonde it would have been dispelled.
When the girl set his eggs before him, he turned
on her with a ferocious scowl and thundered, "What the
hell ails you that you can't get it through your head that
when I say scrambled eggs soft, I mean soft, not hard?
My God! are you dead from the neck up?"
This, I thought was a perfect example of how the
"agent" would act. "He is the kind of man who is
naturally so ugly and overbearing that he would insult
you for nothing when he'd get cash for courtesy!" were
Mama Bockerman's words.
There was no longer need to wait. Action was
what was needed.
I rose from the table, paid my check and passed
quietly into the street.
It was still early morning, but luck was with me I
thought.
It just happened that the Chief of Police was in his
office. He was as fine, clean, stalwart and honorable appearing
a fellow as I had ever set eyes on in a police
department. But then up to this time I had not set eyes
on many. Quickly I told him the story, from the robbing
down to the scrambled eggs.
"Without the shadow of a doubt, Chief," I exclaimed,
"I have two of the thieves spotted. They are
this minute swallowing their breakfast down in the little
coffee shop. If we hurry we can easily get them before
they finish."
The Chief looked surprised, but swapped his hat
for his official cap and said, "All right, Boss! We'll
certainly grab them!"
He hesitated, adjusting some papers on his desk
in an absent-minded manner. For an instant I felt he
had forgotten I was there or that such things as crooks
existed.
