domino. Then he spoke. His voice was as metallic as
steel.
"Remember you!" he uttered in a measured tone.
"Remember you? I never saw you before in my life.
You must be out of your head."
Nee slipped his fingers into his vest pocket. He
fumbled an instant.
Ward's eyes followed his trembling fingers. A
frightened look flashed across his immobile features.
Nee drew from his pocket a small object which he
concealed in his closed hand.
"You are the man who betrayed my trust, my friendship
and my confidence; who fed your greed upon my
bounty; who broke bread with me in my home and who
worshipped with me in my church!"
He opened his hand, palm upturned under the
cold stare of Ward.
"Look!" he cried, his voice trembling with emotion,
"look at this token of faith you gave me. Look at this
Crucifix! N ow. leny me!"
WVard lowered his eves to the little emblem of life's
sorrows and salvation lying in the old gentleman's hand.
He uttered no word, but closed his eyes and dropped
his head.
Gerber, rooted to the spot by the drama of the
thing, coughed nervously and remarked with fictitious
nonchalance:
"Sob stuff, sob stuff!-gets 'em every time. Why
WVard wouldn't know a crucifix if he was nailed to one.
He just thinks the old man double-crossed him."
An official of the U. S. Secret Service from WVashington,
D. C., by the name of G. C. CornwVall accompanied
Mr. Nee to Fort Worth. He took a great interest
in the case and gave me quite a bit of information.
"Why, Norfleet, you should not have had much
trouble getting these men. They are the 'Furev gang'
that used to operate out of New York. The photos of
all the leaders are right here in this town. I sent them
