It may appear that my time on the trip was entirely
taken up with Garst. But it was not, wholly. I made
the acquaintance of an elderly couple. The woman said
she had been a detective before her marriage. They
were returning to their home in Georgia.
I decided to confide in the woman and gave her a
description of the three men still at large; Furey, Spencer
and Hamlin.
She said she would keep a weather eye out for
them. Georgia was a state in which many of them
wintered, so she might happen to see one or more of
them, she said.
I gave her my address and she agreed to drop me
a line if she ever found out anything.
WVhen I stepped off the train in Fort Worth I
watched mv friend Garst. He at once entered a telephone
booth and held a spirited conversation with someone,
judging from the way his head behaved.
I had an immediate hearing before the grand jury,
and when I emerged from the chambers the first person
I laid eyes on was old man Garst. He jumped up and
rushed toward me, gripping my arm in no feeble grasp.
"What did they do"? What did they do? Did they
bill those men?" he demanded excitedly.
I disengaged my arm from his clutch and shrugged
my shoulders.
"Then go back! Go back! You have a perfect
right to know what action they intend to take !" he cried.
"I have nothing further to do with it. It's up to
them," I replied shortly.
He seemed to quiet down and affected indifference.
Together we walked out of the court house.
As we reached the street and I turned to leave him
he said in a hesitant tone that he had been unable to
secure a room in any of the hotels or rooming houses
on account of a convention going on in the city, and
would I not share with him the room he had engaged
in a private house. He laid stress on the fact that
