NORFLEEI

in the Pullman, I was glad to fall into conversation with
him. The newspapers had widely circulated the report
of the arrest of Ward and Gerber and the probability
of them being taken back to Fort Worth for trial. So
it did not seem out of the way that he should speak of
the pair and their capture. He folded his newspaper
and looking across at me said:
"My name is Garst, Perry Garst. I have just
been reading about the capture of these fellows, Ward
and Gerber. It looks like they're in for it now, doesn't
it?"
I told him if I had anything to do with it, I guessed
they were. Of course I was suffering from the humiliating
and financial sting they had given me and my blood
pressure was pretty high. When I found anyone interested,
I assumed that they were sympathizers, that
is, with me, but now I realize I was over eager to pour
out the tale of my misfortunes. Therefore I told Garst
the whole thing.
He was deeply impressed and apparently sympathized
with me. In fact he was so vitally interested
that he declared his intention of stopping off at Fort
Worth to see how the matter turned out.
"I have never been in that town and it will be an
opportunity to see it."
He then leaned his head back against the seat and
dozed. As he slept his head slipped into the corner
against the window. A strong light played straight on
his features.
Memory surged up within me. I had never seen
him before. I was sure of that, still those features!
They were not unfamiliar to me.
"Where, when, who?" I thought. Then I saw it.
He might have been Ward, grown older. Head,
hair, the set of the eyes and general type of face, unnoticed
before, now leapt into relief.
"Perry Garst!" I thought. "Well, perhaps, but
not likely!"
