CHAPTER V.
A SuccEssFuL DISGUISE.
Milton Williams, the Deputy Sheriff from Fort
\Worth, arrived next day. We made preparations to
take Ward and Gerber back to Fort Worth for trial, but
were balked by having to secure requisition papers. This
meant a delay of several more days. We had to wire
Sheriff Clark at Fort WVorth, to get the papers by going
personally to Austin for them and then to bring them on
to San Bernardino.
While waiting for these details to be arranged, I
let no grass grow under my cow-boots. I searched the
records of both telephone and telegraph at the hotel
where the bunch stopped. But there was no record of
either a telephone message or telegram for or from
"Mr. Peck," the name under which Stetson had registere(l
and by which he was known to Cathey.
I also made a search of the nearby towns, going as
far as Los Angeles. At the Police Headquarters there
I found in the rogues' gallery a picture of Stetson
which gave "Furev" as his main alias (possibly his real
name).
I took the photograph and showed it to the executives
in the Sheriff's office.
They readily promised to keep a sharp lookout for
him and said they knew all about his operations and
hoped they would have the chance to land him.
I drew tactful attention to the reward I was offering
but this "trifle" was not to be considered with the importance
of capturing him.
Tley gave out the impression that duty alone was
their noble goal.
When I told them I wanted to leave my suitcase in
their care until I went andl perfected my disguise, I
thought I caught an amused flicker in their eyes. How
