many other crooks were discovered and are now among
the "interior decorations" of various jails and penitentiaries.
If more victims would forget their humiliation at
being "hooked," many more of the bunco men would be
caught.
It is a peculiar thing what an important part little
things played in my adventure. I mean things that appeared
little at the time they happened. Sometimes
what appeared the most unimportant trifles proved the
big issues. It was while engaged in a conversation of
no especial import with my wife I got the idea of going
to California to look for Stetson and the others.
We were discussing the different angles of the
tangled problem.
Mrs. Norfleet said to me: "You know, Frank,
while you were in San Antonio and Corpus Christi, I
was thinking of Spencer a great deal. He did travel
some, didn't he?"
I said he certainly had "kicked up the dust" in a
lot of states.
"When he left our house after his visit I knew
more about the geography of the United States than I
ever learned in school. Sometimes I have wondered if
he really had been in all the places he said he had."
"I guess so," I replied. Spencer and Stetson, as
well as the others, had shown an accurate familiarity
with many of the places in which I had scouted, so I
saw no reason to doubt the truth of his claim.
"Yes," continued my wife in her direct way, "I
counted up all the states he ever mentioned making, and
California was the only one he had neglected. Strike
you at all funny?"
I stopped cleaning my rifle. Being familiar with
the synchronous publicity of the Los Angeleans for
California and their own "home town," I could not see
why the state of Golden Promise should have been sidetracked.
