I aimed the gun at him. He dropped to his knees
and grabbed a Bible from the table, placing it over his
heart.
I told both of them I thought they were partners
and first class crooks.
At that statement Spencer, still on his knees, raised
his right hand in which he held the Bible, crying out,
"Before mv Angel Mother, on my bended knees, with
this Bible uplifted to my God in Heaven, I swear to you
that I never did, nor never will prove false to you, and
that I never did see this man before I met you."
At this moment Stetson suddenly rolled across the
bed and got to his feet on the other side. I turned my
attention to him. He was panting with emotion and
gave me the grand hailing sign of distress of a Master
Mason.
I put the gun back in my pocket. Stetson smiled
and walked up to me.
"You came very near having a brain storm, didn't
you, Brother? Don't that satisfy you? You know I
have trusted you with sixty and seventy thousand dollars
at a time in your room overnight, and not once did I
question your honesty, then when I started away with
this money I only thought I was doing what had been
agreed on."
We all sat down and talked the matter over. It
was agreed that Spencer should leave for Austin to
raise the ten thousand dollars and wire the amount to
me in Dallas. Upon its receipt Stetson and I were to
confirm the bid and collect the one hundred and sixty
thousand dollars the next day and have a final settlement.
Spencer instructed Stetson to pay his portion of the
amount to me in view of the fact that he was just in
receipt of a wire from his home office advising him to
close the deal with me for my stock farm. This amount
