Meet the wetlands
Staff photo by Murray Jud6oH
The Wetland Education Center provides a natural outdoor learning venue for students and anyone else with an interest '*
in the flora and fauna in salt marsh and dune environments. The center, adjacent to the University of Texas Marine Set--
ence Institute, is part of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) and is open to the public.
WEC to add a Saturday tout
The Wetlands Education Center has
added a third guided tour to the schedule,
on Saturdays.
The free tours will now be offered
at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays.
The WEC tours will start at the
amphitheater next to the University of
Texas Marine Science Institute Visitor
Center, which is at the east end of Cot-
ter Avenue before the street ends at the
beach.
The boardwalks at the WEC are ADA
accessible, and several benches are scat-
tered throughout the facility.
Carolyn Rose, who is volunteer coor-
dinator for the Mission-Aransas National
Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) of
which the WEC is part, said the tours are
scheduled in the morning hours to avoid
the worst of the summer heat.
The purpose of the tours, Rose said, “is
to help people appreciate how important
Texas coastal wetlands are to our environ-
ment and economy and to help people
learn how plants and animals adapt to life
in salt marsh and sand dune habitats.’
The WEC is a 3.6-acre salt marsh just
off the Aransas Pass, adjacent to the UT-
MSI Visitor Center.
The WEC is open all day, every day,
and, in addition to the guided tours, fea-
tures a self-guided tour.
Visitors can view the vegetation in
sand dunes and identify the various spe-
cies of plants by reading displays located
throughout the outdoor center.
Kiosks along the trail provide informa-
tion about the wetlands. A geodetic m&rkeY
also exists at the entryway to the centejr,
and provides distances to other National
Estuarine Research Reserves throughout
the world.

of Texas Marine Science Institute can be

Anyone who would like to host a
slam may contact community program
coordinator Pam Greene at 749-4158 or

The slams, held by the City of Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment on the fourth Friday of each
month, are open to the public.
An unnamed but well-known Port
Aransan will be surprised with a special
award at the commemoration for his/her
historical work.
The monthly free, guided beach
walk led by Shirley Fischer will start
at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 26, under the
purple flag next to Horace Caldwell
Pier.
Sponsored by the City of Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment, the walk gives visitors and resi-
dents the opportunity to learn about all
that washes ashore on Mustang Island
beaches. The walks are held on the
fourth Friday of each month.
Beach walkers should wear appro-
priate shoes and clothing and bring a
container for any treasures found.
