Washington, March 25. About 1D0
guests wore present Monday night at
the biennial banquet of tho Vlrglnta
Democratic association, held in tho
banquet room of tho Metropolitan ho-
tel. They included Democrats of na-
tional prominence and most of tho po-
litical leaders and Democrats of con-
gress' from the Old Dominion,
Col. Wattcrson urged on' tho Demo-
crats a general union of forces in op-
position to imperialism in all forms.
He said in part:
"There is no drop of blood in my
veins which is not Virginia blood. Al-
though, for purposes of my own, hav-
ing deep design beneath them,' I chose
this capital of the nation for' my birth-
place, my earliest vision of paradise
tho very dawn of all my conceptions
of honor and duty and glory .nestled
among yonder hills across tho Poto-
mac; and when I go hence. my., ashbs
shall repose .upon tho bosom of Ken-
tucky, Virginia's first born and fairest
daughter. '
"Wo aro Democrats. Wo lovo our
country. We would rescue tho gov-
ernment from tho hands of those who
ore converting it into a government ot
the trusts, for the trusts; and by the
trusts, and restoro it to the hands of
those who will have some regard -for
the rights of the peoplp. The Repub-
lican party Is a syndicated party. Ar-
bitrary power is its motor, the al-
mighty dollar its trademark. If It bo
not checked in the gait it is going it
will in the end surely Mexlcanlze tho
republic .
"Orico more, in the whito house we
have 'the man on horsebtck. Affecting
tho 'simplicity of cowboy, ho conceals
beneath iho 6elf-confidence and queer
manners of the broncho buster tho sen-
timents and ambitions, if not tho 'tal-
ents, of a Diaz. To him, a little thing
like treating an admiral of tho navy,
wearing the laurel leaves of imperish-
able renown, as1 if ho were a baby In
arms, now to bo dandled and now to
bo spanked, as merely an undress af-
fair, begun and ended, during oft mo-
ments between breakfast and luncheon.
To him, tho reprimanding of the lieu-
tenant gentral of tho army, grown
gray in the fighting of the battles of
his country, becomes nn nmuslng horse
play, meant to relax his muscles and
illustrate his high mightiness, whilst
warning lesser oillcers of the army to
obey orders and say nothing.
"But turn from tjic white houso to
the capltol and look at tho P.epub-
llcan3 In congress. The trail of the
trademark Is over them all. Old High
Tariff dances tho cancan in the houso,
whito old Ship Subsidy does tho regular
cakewalk in the senate. Everything
for, tho syndicates. Nothing for the
people."
He closed with a plea for Democratic
harmony.
