VOLUME IX
CANADIAN TEXAS FRIDAY JAN 10 1947
Thank You Mr Allison
On December 31 194G one of Canadians most loyal citi
zens resigned from a job in performance unequaled by any
in the state we believe or perchance in the nation S E
Allison after 28 years of faithfully performing a pleasant
yet unpleasant job resigned as tax assessor and collector for
the Canadian Independent school district
In 1919 the Canadian Independent school district was
organized with S E Allison appointed tax assessor and
collector During these three decades he has collected 985
per cent of all the taxes assessed One and a half per cent
delinquent taxes is quite a record to leave his successor
L A McAdams
During these years the property alue has only increased
from 4292130 to 4300000 The rate has advanced from
50c to 5100
In performing his duty these many years Mr Allison
has been berated and praised as much as any other citizen
In spite of many unpleasant incidents he declares his work
has been very enjoyable
Many times he has gone out of his way to collect taxes
especially during the depression One of his favorite memo-
ries is the time that he bought 100 worth of hay in order
for a taxpayer to pay 65 worth of taxes Just recently ha
collected 15c delinquent tax for the year 193G On another
occasion recently he met a fellow on the street and asked
him for a dollar The man garc him the dollar whereupon
Sam returned 75c and told him that he had just paid his
back taxes of 25c assessed in 1925
Under present state lawp delinquent taxes are not col
lectable after ten years and yet jcar by year through
trades swaps etc Mr Allison has managed to collect back
taxes so that today only the unbelievable figure of less
than 13000 is delinquent Much of this is in personal
levies and although each auditor has recommended his drop-
ping this delinquent list in order to make the record appear
even better Mr Allison has consistently refused believing
that some day 100 per cent collection can be accomplished
Part of the 13000 can be collected only if oil or some other
phenomenon occurs since much of it is river land and has
since reverted back to the state
Mr Allison has prepared a delinquent list by which ho
can at a moments notice tell you who is still delinquent This
list is made up alphabetically Another example to show
the excellent collections is the fact that out of 2146025
taxes assessed in 1919 all has been collected except 5050
In 1945 delinquent taxe3 for the year 1919 collected amount-
ed to 1730
Although many school districts the past few years have
sued for delinquent taxes Mr Allison believes that pa-
tience perseverance and acting as his heart tells him is
much better than going to court The present board of edu
cation heartily agrees that it this plan has served this
community best
As a parting gift Mr Allison has given to the school
district lots 18192021222324 25 value over 1000 to
be used by the school as it sees fit These lots adjoin the
Baker School lots and are needed badly due to increasing en
rollmcnls and lack of ground to play on or they could be
used to expand the plant
In addition to the valued gift above he gave 250 cash
which has been matched by the school board to buy tome
badly needed playground equipment for the two elementary
schools In a few days two new merrygorounds and two
new slides will be installed at the Isaacs and Baker schools
On behalf of the school district patrons faculty pupils
and the board of education we do thank Mr Allison from the
bottom of our hearts for the grand job he has done and for
the fine gifts he has given us
