BELTON HISTORICAL HOMES
TOUR
The eighth annual Belton Historical
Homes Tour will be the last weekend
in April and first weekend in May,
April 28-29 and May 4-5 from 1:00 to
5:00 p.m. each day.
Belton, county seat of Bell County, located
60 miles north of Austin, was
founded in 1850, with its major home
building beginning in 1867-1870 after
the Civil War. Many lovely homes of
the 1890 period are in use today, some
as homes and some as office buildings.
The Historical Homes Tour includes
the Westerfield Home, restored in
1984, from the two-story limestone
jail built as the second Bell County jail
in 1872. The Greek Revival BeamerJones
House was built in 1897 by William
Frank Beamer, owner of the Belton
Brick Yard which produced the offwhite
brick used in many Belton buildings,
and was six years in restoration.
The Curtis Mansion is an Edwardian
red brick home built in 1902-1904 by a
cotton buyer who made-and lost-a
fortune in a few short years. Termed
"a monument to King Cotton," the
house bears many indications of English
imports.
The turn-of-the-century BurfordKennedy
House is a typical Greek
Revival with a wrap porch and tall
columns. Original woodwork and a
sweeping staircase to the second floor
from the foyer are some of this home's
lovely features. The home has seen no
structural changes, and has the original
floors, woodwork, and windows.
Several other homes will be shown
during the Homes Tour as well as an
antique show-sale being held at the
Bell County Museum.
