The rotn Ranch:
A Famify-Run Operation in Throckmorton CountyText and Photographs by Dr. Lawrence Clayton
W hile it is true that some of the
large historic Texas ranches, such as the
XIT and Matador, were founded purely as
business ventures, many ranches in the

and 6666 were started by ambitious,

cattle barons. Their ranches continued for
years thereafter to be run by members of the
family. Although organization of some of
these has changed through the decades, some being quite formally organized as corporations
managed by non-family members,
other ranches remain operations run by
descendants of the founder.
Such a family-run operation is the R.A.
Brown Ranch headquartered west of the
town of Throckmorton located between
Abilene and Wichita Falls. Current owner
and operator of the ranch is Rob Brown,
who is the third generation of the Brown
family to run the ranch. He and his wife
Peggy, along with their children, are currently managing this very productive cattle
and horse operation in some of the best
ranch country Texas has to offer.
The story of the founding of this ranch
actually begins in neighboringJack County

which he sold in 1903. Brown then
moved his family to an elegant Victorianstyle
house on Ballinger Street in Fort
Worth and managed, Evans, Snider and
