ABILENE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
enable the student to get a grasp of the elements of the language
so that he may use lexicons and grammars to some advantage
should he have no more Greek in school; but this course is given
in an effort to make the First Year Greek (Greek 115, 125, and
135) easier and to prevent so many failures there. It is thought
that this preliminary study will amply repay the student and
that it will give him a good start that will enable him to be
master of the later work in Greek, rather than become lost in
mass of it.
122.-Preparatory Greek Course continued. Winter.
132.-Preparatory Greek Course finished. Spring.
The above courses are open to all who have not had Greek.
The work is taken slowly and systematically. Only the leading
features of the language are given. Vocabulary is made prominent.
Those finishing can read easy portions of John and Xenophon
and can write short, simple sentences. This course will
help much in etymology of English words.
115.-This is a college course for beginners. The work is
thorough and confined to the rudiments of the language. Text:
Allen, First Year Greek.
125.-This is a continuation of the first course. A large
volume of work will be done.
135.-Xenophon's Anabasis.
This is a continuation of courses 115 and 125. Xenophon's
Anabasis is studied through the first book. Goodwin's Greek
Grammar is used for reference and for review of forms. Syntax
has more emphasis. Facility in reading is cultivated, but sightreading
is not undertaken. Both literal and smooth translations
are required. From the smooth translations the student makes
re-translation into good Greek. Comments are given in the historical
situation involved.
213.-Anabasis. More than two books of the Anabasis will
be covered. At first a close study of forms is made. Goodwin,
Greek Grammar is reviewed closely. Composition in Greek is
given to meet the needs of the class. Rapid reading closes the
term.
212.-Odyssey. A two-hour course is offered in the Odyssey.
