PUBLIC SPEAKING.
113.-Foundations of Public Speaking. Control of the
body; the process of respiration; study of vocal mechanism
and of the organs of speech; development of suppleness and
strength. Open to all who are seriously interested in such
wo9k.
123.-Vocal Technique. A study of English sounds, vowel
and consonantal; pronunciation, enunciation and articulation;
correct breathing; placing of the voice. Open to all who have
had Public Speaking 113, or its equivalent.
133. Vocal Training. Cultivation of vocal purity; elimination
of faults; timbre, inflection, force, rate, pitch, volume,
quality, and flexibility. Prerequisite, Public Speaking 113
and 123.
212.-Oral Expression. Elimination of mannerisms; development
of poise and self-confidence; gesture; action. Open
only to those who have had previous training or experience in
Public Speaking.
222.-Platform Speaking. Grace and ease; physical interpretation;
development of definite thinking, vivid imagination
and the resultant emotion; practice in extempore speaking.
Open to those who have had previous training.
232.-Personality and Style. Personality and style as determined
by the character of the speaker and his relation to
his audience; impromptu speaking; story telling. Open to students
who have had considerable training or experience.
235.-Argumentation. A study of the principles of logic
and reasoning; cultivation of ability in analytical thinking;
briefing; speech-writing; oral and written tests. (Formerly
English 235.)
245.-Debate. A continuation of 235; training in the detection
of fallacies in popular argument; team competition;
thesis writing; practice debates before public audiences. Prerequisite,
Public Speaking 235.
