VIII. DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES.
All college students should begin foreign language coursesancient
or modern-at the first opportunity and complete the requirements
as soon as possible. Postponing these courses will
prove unsatisfactory and dangerous for any student.
Less than three beginners' courses in the same language will
not be credited towards a degree.
In general, those who have had one year of modern language
in high school should elect 125 courses; those who have had two
years, 135 courses; and those who have had three years in high
school should elect 215 courses.
FRENCH.
115.-Beginners' Course. Reading, conversation, grammar.
Correct pronunciation is insisted upon from the first. Vocabulary,
idioms, and grammatical principles are fixed in memory
by extensive use of French conversation, thus a living language
is produced, not a mere book-language. In the first year the emphasis
is placed on the natural language of every-day life while
the more formal productions of literature are deferred to the
following years. To this end short stories, novels, and plays
that best portray French life, customs, and ideals are read. During
the year the collateral reading of at least one book in English
on French life, customs, and ideals will be required.
125.-Continuation of 115.
135.-Continuation of 125.68
