AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT-The aim of the work of this department
is to arouse the entire being, to bring into play the mental
and physical in the development of personality, that an expression of
mind and soul may be made through the voice and body. Such work
is a potent factor in the education of the child; it is of untold value
though she never appear upon the platform. Besides personal culture,
it promotes a repose of manner, a self- possession, and an ease
in conversation that is invaluable.
There are two sides of education. We may call one impression,
and the other expression, the acquisition of information on the one
hand, and the interpretation and expression of the thought and feeling
of the individual on the other. Expression is not only a department
but a phase of education; expression studies the mental cause and
finds that not phraseology but the attitude of the mind toward the
subject determines inflection. Without action of the mind the voice51
