SESSION OF 1918-'19
HEBREW
First Year.-By the inductive methods the class studies the language
from the first of Genisis through the twenty-fourth chapter,
fifty pages or the remainder of the book being required as independent
parallel for the year. Harper's Manual and Method and Elements of
Hebrew are used. To assist in locating forms small lexicons may be
used but all students are required to use the standard lexicon by
Brown, Driver and Briggs. Exercises in rendering English into Hebrew
are required throughout the year. The details of the language
and the matter of vocabulary are emphasized. The Manual and
Method is finished during the first two terms. During the last term
the class continues reading, study of vocabulary, and review of grammar
and does some work in exegesis. For a Hebrew Bible a large,
clear print of Kittel s or Ginsburg's text is required. Three hours a
week.
Second Year.-Parts of the historical books and of the prophets
are read. During the first term a thorough review of the vocabulary
and etymology is made. Written exercises are required throughout
the year. Syntax is studied during the second term from Harper's
Elements of Syntax. In the last quarter extensive exegesis is required
on select texts in the prophets and the Psalms, and some study of advanced
grammar is required. A hundred pages independent parallel
reading is required for the year. This course presupposes that of the
first year.
GREEK
First Year.-Two years of preparation are required for entrance
to this course. Mark is the basis of the work for the first term, and
etymology of the noun and of the verb receives the main emphasis.
The fundamentals of the language are briefly reviewed. Robertson's
Short Grammar of the Greek New Testament is used in connection
with Smyth's grammar or some other good one. Written exercises are
required throughout the year. In the second term syntax of noun,
verb, and the sentence in general is studied. Portions of the other
gospels are studied. During the third term the knowledge gained in
tli first two terms is put to use in exegetical work in one or two of t -
minor epistles. PhiliDriars will be taken up first. Thayer's Lexicon
of the Greek New Testament is required. Other texts will be used bsides
references to the library in special cases of exegesis. The re
quired parallel reading is the four gospels. Greek text by Westcot!
and Hort is used. Three hours a week.
Second Year.-This course presupposes the one above or its
equivalent. A book or several chapters are read from the Septuagint.
This is followed by a reading of Revelation. The main work of the
first two quarters is on Robertson's Grammar of the Greek New Testament
in the Light of Modern Research. In the second term Souter's
Canon and Text of the New Testament is read and the students learn
how to use Tischendorf's Novum Testamentum Graece to determine43
