42 ABILENE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
DEPARTMENT OF BELIGIOUS, HISTORY AND MISSIONS
First Year.-Ancient, Medieval and Modern History. In this year's
course the subject is treated as a whole. The text books used will
be McGlothlin's Guide to the Study of Church History, Moncrief's
Church History. Reference books: Mosheim, Eusebius, Newman,
Hurst, and others that may be suggested by the instructor. Three
hours a week.
Second Year.-Special phases of Chruch History will be traced.
Emphasis will be given to the early centuries of the church and the
great religious movements will be studied in a correlated way. Vedder's
History of the Baptists and Rowe's Restoration Movements will
be used as a basis for study during the last term. Three hours a
week.
Third Year.-Comparative Religions and Missions.
During the first term a comparative study of the great religions
of the world will be made. Other readings will be required, but the
work of the term will be based on Speer's The Light of the World.
"The field is the world." Here we get a view of the field with its
problems and opportunities. The life and literature are studied as
they relate to Christianity. We get acquainted with the great religious
movements of the world. During the second term we study the history
of Christian missions from the first century to our own time. The
various currents are traced, and the historical bearings are noted.
The text used is The Missionary Enterprise by Bliss. The third term
will be a study of the missionary plan as it develops through the Old
Testament and bears fruit in the New Testament age. An effort will
be made to relate the missionary work to the individual -nd to
churches. A study will be made of the present world situation. -eligiously.
The call of God to show to the world the way of salvation
will be impressed on the students. Independent of the course the
students in general will be expected to engage voluntarily In p-ivate
mission-study classes. Some practical development is expected from
this course. It will be of especial advantage to all who think of doing
mission work at home or abroad. Three hours a week.
DEPARTMENT OF BIBLICAL LANGUAGES
Only mature students may take these courses. Something is said
about the problems of textual criticism in the Old Testament. An effort
is made to give courses quite thorough and, at the same time,
practical.
