58 ABILENE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
PURPOSE OF THE DEPARTMENT
Abilene Christian College is run on the basis that it is as much the
purpose of a school to provide atmosphere as it is to give instruction
in literature and science. The aim of Abilene Christian College is to
provide an opportunity for a real education rather than to make a
commercial venture. The college is not run for financial gain, but
an effort is made to contribute to the happiness of our fellows by inspiring
and directing them to noble endeavor. To that end we have
gotten our teachers from among the best instructors to be had. They
are artists in their line. Most of them have been with us for some time
and we feel that we know them. The others come with such unusual
recommendations that we feel sure of their characters and ability.
Credit
As many as two courses in any department of Fine Arts may be
counted towards a B. A. degree. Under no circumstances will more
than four courses be counted.
ART
MRS. SEWELL
Abilene Christian College is justly very much pleased with this
department. The class has been large, and has done good work in the
past. Strong words of commendation are due Mrs. Sewell for her excellent
work in art and for the excellent results of her teaching, and
we hope for a large class during the session of 1918-'19.
The education of every person should, when possible, embrace the,
study of art, for it trains the eye, elevates the soul, and creates an
uplifting influence all through life by developing a love of the beautiful
in nature.
The work in this department includes:
1. Outline drawing in pencil.
2. Still life studies in pencil.
3. Study from cast in charcoal.
4. Flower study from nature in water color and oil.
5. Still life and flower painting in water color and oil.
6. Landscape painting in oil and water color.
7. Sketching from nature in water color.
