I TROUTMAN (continued from page 7)

25, 1839, President Mirabeau Lamar approved
an act of the Texan Congress establishing the
Lone Star flag we see everywhere today.
But why the Lone Star? How had this symbol
of Texas occurred to so many people over such
great gaps of time and geography? Perhaps the
idea was original to Jane Long in 1819 and was
fostered by her after her return to Texas. She
resided in various Texas communities from 1824
until her death in 1880 at the age of eighty-two,
and was described by Noah Smithwick as "leading
the tone" of the colony during the 1830's.
That might account for Sarah Dodson's choice of
the Lone Star, for the Alamo defenders' flag
described by Crockett, for Austin's design as well
as for other flags that appeared in Texas at the
time. But how did it occur simultaneously to
Johanna Troutman in distant Georgia as she began
to stitch "This silken banner! This silken
banner! In glorious triumph soon shall wave,
Oe'r forest wide and green savanna, Borne by the
chivalrous and brave"?
Regarding the Lone Star's genesis, Smithwick
referred the curious to Bancroft, who merely
picked up a questionable anecdote from Thrall:
To wit, that lacking a proper seal at the Consultation
of October, 1835, Governor-elect Henry
Smith was said to have used one of his brass coat
buttons which happened to have a single star
embossed on it.
"Nay!", says the determined researcher to
this trivial note. Even if the dates tallied, no
symbol that inspired such patriotism should have
had such a pedestrian beginning. However, having
come to the end of my rope on the project, I
turned to Deolece Parmelee, the former Director
of Research for the Texas Historical Commission,
whose knowledge of Texana is encyclopedic.
"The answer," Parmelee speculates, "might be
found in the story of Aaron Burr and his dream of
creating an Anglo-American empire in the Southwest."
Burr had proposed that the U.S. seize the
Spanish colonies in the Southwest as early as 1796
and had purchased land in Louisiana presumably
as a staging area for an incursion into Texas.
Such an expedition never occurred as Burr was
arrested in Natchez, Mississippi, for treason and
returned to the North for trial and eventual acquittal.

Had Burr envisioned a Gulf-to-Pacific
empire symbolized by one all-encompassing
American star, not by the multiple stars of the
Federal jurisdiction? And had his ideas influenced
Jane Wilkinson and James Long (both with
connections in Natchez) and spread as far as
Crawford County, Georgia, to affect Johanna
Troutman?
What ever the truth may be, it still eludes
this writer. Hopefully, other researchers can
throw more light on the origins of the Lone Star in
future issues of Texas Heritage magazine. l
