TWO TEXAS HERITAGE
PROJECT BOOKLETS
HOMETOWN HEROES OF TEXAS
AND WEST TEXAS ENTREPRENEURS are
being published and will soon be available.
THP is a program of the Texas Historical
Foundation.
J. Virgil Waggoner, President of El Paso
Products Company in Odessa, is contributing
the printing. Waggoner, an acknowledged
civic leader in Odessa and Houston served as
state wide chairman of the Hometown Heroes
Committee for the past two years.
He stated that "both these booklets are
long overdue in recognizing the contributions
of people who built this great state. Citizens
at the grass roots level are responsible for furthering
the pioneer traditions of volunteerism,
work ethic, and leaving your community a
better place than when you found it. Adherence
to these values make Texas unique and
it is time we recognized and preserved these
accomplishments."
HOMETOWN HEROES will feature
"civic statesmen", men and women who have
improved their hometowns through public
service and work in civic, charitable, educational,
historical, health care, and industrial
development organizations. Over three hundred
entries list the local accomplishments of
these outstanding individuals.
WEST TEXAS ENTREPRENEURS spotlights
businessmen and women from the one
hundred thirty-five county area encompassed
by the West Texas Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber sponsored this phase of the
project as part of their Free Enterprise Development
Program. Free Enterprisers from
other counties will be included in a state wide
directory.
Both directories will be placed in the certified
Texas Heritage Resource Centers located
in 197 libraries. These THP sponsored
repositories are designed to strengthen
Texana collections and make materials avail

able for students and teachers of Texas history
and the interested public.
Individuals and organizations who submitted
nominations wishing copies for presentations
to honorees or their descendants
should contact the Foundation office.

Historic Preservation to help finance a oneday
conference entitled "Main Street, Beaumont,
Texas: Reuse of Downtown
Buildings." The conference will be held
Thursday, November 17. For more information
write the Beaumont Heritage Society,
2985 French Road, Beaumont, Texas
77706.
The Heritage Association of San Marcos will
hold its fifth annual Antique Show and sale
to be held on Saturday and Sunday, November
19 & 20, at the National Guard Armory,
City Park, San Marcos. Distinguished dealers
from around the State will display antiques,
primitives, silver, crystal, art,
furniture, jewelry and collectables.
A Gala Preview Party for the Antique
Show will be held on Friday, November 18,
from 7-10 p.m. Tickets for the Gala will be
$815.00.
Proceeds from the Antique Show will
benefit the preservation projects of the Heritage
Association of San Marcos.
The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History
in Fort Worth opened its doors this
summer. Among its many valuable and
historically significant exhibits is the permanent
display on General William Jenkins
Worth, for whom Fort Worth was named.
Mr. Bill Turner, President and Founder of
Allied Fence Company made the contribution
to the museum after spending 7 years researching
the life and General Worth, discovering
one of the richest pieces of history
since Fort Worth was founded in 1849.
Major General William Jenkins Worth
was born March 1, 1794 and died May 7,
1849. Being a Mexican War hero he was
also considered by many to be among the
best American commanders in the field receiving
the Congressional Sword of Honor
for his many accomplishments.
One of the first recorded Texas Historic

Landmarks, the old Issac Graves home, circa
1857, in McKinney, may be torn down in
February 1984 if the house is not moved
from its present location. The house is being
given away but must be relocated.

AROUND THE STATE
Mr. Clifton Caldwell, member of the Texas
Historical Commission, and former THF
Board member, was recently appointed by
President Reagan to serve a four year term
on the National Advisory Council on Historic
Preservation. The Council is an independent
agency of the Federal Government serving to
counsel the President and his staff on critical
Preservation matters. Mr. Caldwell, husband
of Shirley Caldwell current THF Board member,
and Dallas County Historical member, is
the first Southwesterner to receive such an
appointment.
A tribute to restoration architect, Raiford
Stripling, opened at the Institute of Texan
Cultures in San Antonio September 10 and
will continue through November 20th. The
tribute includes a chronicle of Stripling's contribution
through a photographic exhibit of
his work, a symposium of Texas Heritage
and Historic restoration, and documentary
videotapes overviewing early Texas History.
Mr. Stripling's restorations have included
such Texas landmarks as the Presidio
La Bahia and the Mission Espiritu Santo,
both in Goliad.
On May 19 the Calallen Middle School Library
in Corpus Christi was designated an official
Texas Heritage Resource Center. Mrs.
Robert E. Haegelin, Chairman of the Texas
Heritage Project in Nueces County made the
presentation with the official Resource Center
Plaque.
Resource Centers are collections of
Texana within a library designed to insure
that every Texan has access to books and
materials containing important facts about
the unique and unmatched heritage of our
State.
