Dear Members: "_1983-84
for the Foundation has been a banner year. We are offering no excuses for unfinished work because
the Foundation, under the outstanding leadership of Mr. Parrott, has exceeded our planned expectations in
every category of endeavor. The Directors and membership have unified with productive results truly making
our claim that the Texas Historical Foundation is Texas' finest preservation organization ring with truth. - kE
Membership is now well in excess of 3,000, an increase of nearly 150%. That makes us the fastest growing
preservation organization, not only in the state of Texas but maybe within the entire United States. We have
begun active successful fund raising drives on several fronts: 1) for a permanent endowment to insure the future
of our organization, 2) grants for special projects such as our Visiting Specialist Program, and 3) funds for our
archeological and preservation trust funds.
Our new publication, TEXAS HERITAGE has received statewide acclaim but most importantly, it is becoming
an effective voice for the goals of preservation throughout the state. And, what's more, it makes for good
reading.
Our sesquicentennial project has been funded through the generosity of E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company,
and its energy subsidiary, Conoco, Inc., with a $106,000 grant for the publication of a book of photographs
dramatizing the early history of Texas. We are deeply grateful to the generous spirit of DuPont-Conoco and to the
persistent and enthusiastic efforts of Bill Wright. Many good things could be said about Bill's involvement in this
project but the best explanation would be that it could never have been accomplished without him.
This year's Annual Convention holds the promise of being the finest ever conducted by the Foundation or
for that matter, any other preservation organization in the state. Of course, the real test will be whether we will
be favored with your enthusiastic support and attendance.O N
While we may wish to stop and savor some of our new-found success, the press of circumstances simply will
not permit it. One can only develop greater humility from recognizing the numerous accomplishments which
were available to us but were beyond our reach and resources to conclude. The ambition to turn these missed
preservation opportunities into permanent heritage for all Texans will be the motivation for the Foundation to
grow from success to success. inel Crt
