Giants of Ea
Josiah H. Bell received the first grant deeded to a member of
Austin's Colony, was entrusted with the affairs of the colony during
Austin's absence, founded the towns of East and West Columbia.Mary Austin Holley, cousin of Stephen F.
Austin, never moved to Texas but owned land on Flores
Bayou and Quintana in Brazoria County and visited in the
area for months at a time, staying with her brother, Henry
Austin at his home at Bolivar, about 40 miles up the Brazos
River from the mouth, and with her relatives, the Perrys,
at Peach Point Plantation. She probably did more to publicize
Texas than any other single person, writing voluminous
letters, newspaper articles, even books about the
state. Her Texas Diary covers a period from 1835 to 1838, e
most of which was spent in the area, and gives a graphic
picture of the living conditons, the social and political
activities. L
James W. Fannin, Jr. settled at Velasco in
1834, established a plantation on the San Bernard River
near Brazoria, took part in several battles of the Revolution
and was in command of the Texas forces at Goliad
where he and most of his men were massacred.
John Austin aided Stephen F. Austin in settling the original colonists,
founded the town of Brazoria in 1828, was elected alcalde of the Jurisdiction of
Brazoria in 1832, established one of the first cotton gins in Texas, was a delegate to the
Convention of 1833, was one of the leaders in the Battle of Velasco.
W. D. C. Hall was in Texas twice before returning to what was to be
Brazoria County in 1835 where he established a plantation called China Grove which
he later (in 1842) sold to Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston. He was a member of the Safety
Committee at Columbia, appointed adjutant general by Burnet, served as secretary of
war of the Republic.William H. Wharton, an attorney from
Tennessee, established Eagle Island Plantation in the
present city of Clute, in 1827. He took part in the
Battle of Velasco and the Siege of Bexar, was named
with Stephen F. Austin and Branch T. Archer to a
commission to seek support, men, money, and arms
from the United States to aid in the coming revolution,
was the Republic's first emissary to the United
States, served in the first Senate.
John A. Wharton, also an attorney, joined his'
1833, was a delegate to the Consultation, an adjutant gener
