2. A board would then be covered with
a piece of 100% cotton muslin fabric
which has been pre-washed to remove
any sizings or finishes, and carefully
ironed to remove the wrinkles. The
fabric length should be sufficient to go
completely around the board, plus one
inch for the seam, and two inches wider
than the board. Rip, rather than cut the
fabric so that the straight of the grain
can be matched parallel to the edge of
the mat board.
The fabric should be wrapped around
the board tightly enough to be snug
without warping the board. Turn under
the raw fabric edge and overcast
the seam to close. The sides should
then be turned in, the fabric carefully
straightened, and the seam stitched
closed.
3. Place the sampler on the mounting
board, carefully centering it within the
frame space. Pin with entomological
or lace pins, matching the warps and
wefts of the sampler to the warps and
wefts of the mounting fabric. Baste the
sampler to the mounting fabric with
long running stitches and remove the
pins.
