HARPERS WEEKLY. VOL. XVIII,
SEPT. 14, 1874.

Back-to-school time in September, 1874 provided an occasion for this engraving in Harper's Weekly by
Frederick Stuart Church. It accompanied an editorial on the need for universal compulsory education. The
scene could be any place, including Texas. From such things are stereotypes created: The earnest barefoot
orator, the composed, dedicated teacher, the shame of the nearby miscreant.
