Visit with your state and federal officials
when they are in Austin or in their home
districts. When at home, take them on
tours of historic sites; show them what
preservation activities have been successful
in their districts. Provide opportunities
to present your officials with recognition
awards and certificates of appreciation for
assistance to your organization or community.
Educate your elected officials earlydo
not wait for a crisis situation to arise.
Education of other groups is also important.
Get to know the following groups
and work with them to make sure that
they are supporting your projects: local
chamber of commerce, tourist bureau,
parks and recreation department, library,
museums, art groups, school districts, and
professional groups.
It is important to maintain an open
and honest working relationship with
your elected officials. They are the people
who will vote to cut, maintain, or increase
funding for preservation. It is only
through these relationships that we will
have an opportunity to present and interpret
factual economic figures which will
enable them to consider the continuation
of appropriated funding for preservation.
The Texas House of Representatives
Committee on Cultural and Historical
Resources is the committee that is responsible
for legislative and budget oversights
for nine state agencies, including
the THC. The committee makes the budget
recommendations to the Appropriations
Committee of the House of Representatives.
The committee is willing to
work with, and listen to, the concerns
and needs of organizations interested in
preservation. Letters from organizations
and individuals are wanted and needed.
Let us know what kind of legislation is
needed so that appropriate recommendations
can be made in order to better support
your organizations activities.
Another way that you can help support
the programs of the THC is by supporting
organizations that lobby for preservation.
One such group is Preservation Texas.
There are other indirect ways to supportthe THC. Buy officially sanctioned Sesquicentennial
items, such as the gold and
silver State of Texas medallions. By purchasing
only official merchandise you are
generating revenue for Texas.400 million

CIHISTORICAL MAIN
MARKERS STREETPreservation pays. The programs of the
THC are proven to be economically beneficial
to our state. Support the THC,
write your legislators, and buy Texas. It is
up to each and every one of us to preserve
the culture and history of Texas, a legacy
that belongs not only to us but also to
generations yet to come.
