LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
/he HERITAGE is now in its fifth
year of publication. Our mission
today is as clear as it was when the
first edition of HERITAGE produced
under the name of Cornerstone, came
into your collective historical lives.
That is, to produce a readable and
entertaining magazine dedicated to
preserving the structural heritage of
the state of Texas. Our mission is
indelibly preserved in our souls, as
surely as though it were put there by
an ancient artisan using the mortar,
brick and wood raised from the dust
of structures lost from our landscape.
While we, in our journalistic
repose, believe that we have satisfied
the challenge to deliver an entertaining
magazine, we still remain
frustrated with the other part of our
mission: the preservation of the structures
of Texas.
The advance of time has proven to
be a relentless enemy. It brings with
it more innovative forces, seemingly
dedicated to the destruction of our
historical heritage. Developers respond
to demands for business space
by fashioning faceless, milk-carton
structures called office buildings,
and in the process, tear down buildings
with far more architectural
integrity. Dams bring rising rivers
that slowly cover thousands of years
of man's pictographic expressions,
and the bones and artifacts of his
being. Vandalism and simple pollution
slowly erode away and deface
our important structures. This is not
to be meant as a statement against -progress, but to remind us that
change is not always progress. Some
of the best does not lie in the future,
but is here with us in the present as a
reminder of our past.
Our job through this magazine, in
part, is to give eyes to words, that we
all might see more clearly how we
need to preserve the best of our past.
Every time an important historical
structure crumbles to the ground,
there's a sense of failure felt among
all of us. When we view the vast
landscape of Texas and see the many
important structures that need to be
preserved, and the limited resources
available for such preservation,
there is a feeling of frustration. However,
from this emotion springs the
motivation to continue the efforts of
the HERITAGE -even more when we
recognize that we are one of the few
remaining publications dedicated to
insuring that what was Texas will
always be Texas.. ./books-on
