CORNERSTONE
THF Annual Meeting
Held in Austin
The annual membership meeting of
the Texas Historical Foundation took
place in Austin on July 7 and 8. It
opened with a reception and buffet
dinner at Sweetbrush, the historic
home of David and Judy Bland. The
Greek Revival mansion, built in 1853
by master builder Abner Cook, provided
a lovely setting for the event.
The executive board met Friday and
Saturday. Saturday's educational session
featured a presentation of "Texas
Archaeological Preservation and Regional
Perspectives" by Pat MercadoAllinger,
president-elect of the Texas
Archaeological Society (TAS), and by
Bob Parvin, noted photo journalist and
supporter of archaeological preservation.
They discussed the progress and
problems of archaeological research in
Texas, which vary from region to region.
Parvin stressed that landowners
who know of archaeological sites on
their properties but are afraid of
vandalism can be assured that when
they work with TAS professionals to
record those sites, the information will
be held in confidence. The presentation
included a lively question and
answer session.
Joan Rabins, executive director of
the Texas Historical Foundation, introduced
the luncheon speaker Ron
Tyler, director of the Texas State
Historical Association. Tyler's subject
was the Handbook of Texas, now undergoing
a complete revision under the
auspices of the Association and due out
in 1995 to coincide with the sesquicentennial
of Texas' statehood. Tyler
praised the late Walter Prescott Webb,
the first editor who worked for years on
the handbook. He compiled information
from over a thousand volunteer
contributors and saw it through to publication
in 1952.
The membership meeting was held
Saturday afternoon. The next meeting
of the Texas Historical Foundation
Board of Directors will be held in College
Station on October 21 and 22.David and Judy Bland home, Sweetbrush, site of the Annual Meeting reception.
MacGilvray to Direct
Center for Historic
Resources
A change in organization of the Texas
Historical Foundation and the Center for
Historic Resources has been approved,
which divides responsibility for the Foundation
and for the Center. Joan Rabins,
who was interim director of both entities,
has been appointed executive director of
the Foundation. Dan MacGilvray has
been appointed as director of the Center
for Historic Resources. It is felt that separating
the responsibilities will enhance
effective administration. The two will
work closely to ensure integration of programs. At the July meeting of the Foundation's
executive committee, MacGilvray
praised the progress the Foundation has
made, citing its increased membership,
growth of endowment funds, and enhanced
quality of Heritage magazine. He is
developing plans for the Center and the
Foundation to work together in making
their expertise in preservation readily
available to the public.Heritage
