FROM THE EDITOR
T he mission of the Texas Historical
Foundation-since its articles of
incorporation were first signed in
1953 by such notables as Ima Hogg and
James Wheat-has remained essentially
unchanged. Then as now, the board of
directors was determined to promote,
assist, develop, and conserve Texas'
historical resources, and assist other
groups in promoting an awareness of the
need for the preservation of Texas'
heritage.
In addition to providing the funds for
workshops and projects, the Foundation
has been proud to publish Heritage, reporting on Foundation
projects as well as publicizing activities of other groups devoted to
preservation and education regarding Texas' buildings,
archaeological sites, artifacts, and documents.
We are often told that when a historic preservation project
receives coverage in a publication like Heritage, local pride
increases and the effort to enlist assistance in preservation efforts
is aided substantially. Beginning with this issue we want to
include even more local activities which can profit from publicityand financial support. Proposals for small,
matching funds grants from the newly
established Jeanne Blocker Memorial Fund
can be made using the Request for Proposal
form on the inside front cover. These grants
are specifically intended to provide
assistance to small communities.
Rural conservation is not a new
direction for the Foundation. The small
communities, their buildings, history, and
culture have always been important to
Texans. And it may take only a small
helping hand from the Foundation to make
a big difference.
We invite our readers to submit short reports on local
preservation activities, such as the ones on Granger and Industry in
this issue. Let Heritage help spread the word that preserving our
heritage-with a special emphasis on rural communities-is still
important in the 1990s!Carolyn Fasel

THE TEXAS HISTORICAL
FOUNDATION
A non-profit organization devoted to historic preservation
requests applications and nominations for
BOARD MEMBERS
There are currently a few openings on the Board of Directors of the
Texas Historical Foundation. The Board is seeking to recruit new
members who will reflect the full range of historical, preservation and
archaeological interests that the Foundation has traditionally
supported. It is also important that the Board represent the different
geographical areas of the state. At present we are seeking to increase
representation from West Texas and encourage applications from that
area. Please send cover letter and curriculum vita to:
