Historic Resources Survey
of Ellis County
An architectural resources survey of Ellis
County was begun in October by HardyHeck-Moore,
historic preservation consultants
from Austin.
The survey is in support of construction of
the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory
near Waxahachie and will identify and
determine the architectural and historical
importance of buildings in the county which
may be impacted by the laboratory construction.
All buildings and structures in the county
which were built before 1942, or which were
related to World War II activity, will be
mapped, photographed, and researched by
the survey teams. Historic properties in Ennis
and Waxahachie, which were identified by
the consulting firm earlier, will not be examined. The Survey project is part of the environmental
assessment program for the laboratory
and is necessary to ensure compliance with
various federal and state legislation concerning
the protection of cultural resources. Along
with a simultaneous archaeological investigation,
it is the necessary first step before
actual construction of the project begins.
Hardy-Heck-Moore estimates some 4,000
historic properties will be found, including
commercial buildings, schools, residences,
churches, and agricultural structures. The
survey teams will drive each road and street in
the county, and upon locating a historic
property, stop and document the property
with photographs, architectural description,
and some historical research. Owners of
important historic structures may be asked to
complete short questionnaires in an attempt
to uncover historical information. The project
will take about six months to complete.
Final documentation of the survey will be
maintained at the Texas Historical Commission
in Austin.
Hardy-Heck-Moore has extensive experience
in Ellis County. The firm previously
completed surveys and historic district nominations
in Ennis and Waxahachie and last
year completed a project for the Texas State
Department of Highways and Public Transportation
which documented remaining historic
iron truss bridges in the state, including
those in Ellis County. David Moore, a member
of the firm, has been a contributor to
Heritage magazine.
Marlene Elizabeth Heck, a principal in
the firm will be guest editing the special
summer 1990 preservation issue of Heritage.
