Texas Historic Landmark plaque on the front of the San Elizario Church.
In both Socorro and San Elizario, some
of the original materials from the earlier
churches were incorporated into the construction.
In fact, many of the original
vigas from the earliest Socorro Mission of
1680 are believed to be those supporting
the roof of the present mission; they are
distinctive in their colorful, if fading,
geometric designs motifs.
As witnesses to these human products
of our heritage, we enrich our lives and
grasp a sense of continuity, of reverence,
and of participation in a human and spiritual
chain that has long preceded us and
that will, with our best efforts, continue :
long into the future.

The Texas Historic Foundation has
committed $7,000 of its resources for
the restoration program. Support from
within the Diocese and the local communities
has already passed $100,000
in pledges. However, more than
$250,000 is needed for the maintenance
endowment alone, and many
times that amount for immediate stabilization
needs of the historic missions.
The Diocese, through the Bishop's
Historic Missions Committee, is appealing
to all those concerned with
Texas heritage to contribute to these
oldest historic landscapes in the state.
