to construct the
exterior wadis of Texas red
granite, instead of the
fossiliferous
limestone in the original
plans,
precipitated
a great amount
of change in
the appearance of the
building.
Because of the harder
quality of the granite,
the detailing of the
original facade
had to be greatly
simplified.
'The carved capitals,
open baluster raifs,
urns and cornice dentils
and brackets were
deleted.
Simple bevels
replaced cyma recta
curves, and the sand
rubbed finish of the
original facade became
rock face, with five- and
eight-cut finishes,
and polished work
