Those participating in the May 5-9 Spring Tour will have the chance to view spectacular rock art in the Lower Pecos area of Texas.
the expert guide on this trip. An added
bonus: The journey between these sites
should be spectacular as well, since at this
time of the year the spring wildflowers are
expected to be in full bloom in the Hill
Country.
The May 5-9 tour, headquartered in Del
Rio, will feature prehistoric rock art of the
Lower Pecos area. Participants will spend a
day boating on the Pecos River to view
rock art along that waterway. The next
day, the tour group heads for Seminole
Canyon to learn more about the fascinating
rock art there and the Langtry area to
experience the colorful history of Judge
Bean's territory. In addition to these adventures,
this excursion will include lunch
at an Alsatian restaurant and a short tour of
Castroville (on the ride to Del Rio from
San Antonio), a wine and cheese social at
the oldest winery in Texas, and dinner at
Dr. Brinkley's House, the restored residence
of one of Del Rio's most colorful
legends. Dr. Solveig Turpin, the foremost
expert in rock art of the Lower Pecos and
northern Mexico, will lead this excursion.
A rare opportunity to observe an archaeological
dig will be part of the "The
Caddo Country Tour," scheduled for June
3-7. A noted archaeologist will guide participants
to several ancient Caddoan sitesin northeast Texas and Arkansas. Along
the way, the bus will stop at the sites of
some of the earliest Spanish missions in
east Texas, including the Delores Mission
site in San Augustine. The tour originates
in Dallas, where participants will stay at
the Adolphus Hotel, and includes an overnight
stay in Jefferson at the historic Excelsior
Hotel. The tour ends with a visit to
the Texas Archaeological Society's Field
School on the Red River, where more than
500 people will be participating in a research
project at a major Caddoan village
and mound complex. Also included is a
tour of the TAS Field Lab. Those who wish
to participate in the research project may
do so and should contact THF for additional
information regarding that option.
The price for these one-of-a-kind tours
is $750 per person, double occupancy; there
is a $75 single supplement. This price includes
transportation on the tour, entry/
guide fees, all meals (except breakfast),
overnight accommodations, and baggage
