For much of his aduft life,
F. Lee Lawrence of Tyfer
has devoted himself to
historicalpreservation, the
study of Texas history,
and the
organizations that
promote these interests.W hen the Texas Historical
Commission met earlier this year in San
Angelo, recognition was given"for 35 years
of significant contributions to non-profit
organizations involved in preserving Texas
history". This year's Mary Moody Northen
Award was presented by the Texas Historical
Foundation to F. Lee Lawrence of Tyler.
The late Mrs. Northen of Galveston is
commemorated by this award because shewas a long-time member of the Texas Historical
Foundation and financial supporter
of the state's Historical Commission.
Thirty years ago, in Odessa, at another
joint meeting of the Texas State Historical
Survey Committee (now the Texas Historical
Commission) and the Texas Historical
Foundation, I met F. Lee Lawrence.
It was only in January of this year, however,
upon the birth of my fifth granddaughter,Above: F. Lee Lawrence is pictured on the right at the unveiling of the Camp Ford Travel Information Marker
# 1 on January 14, 1962. Removing the marker cover is Midland oilman and philanthropist George T. Abell,
whose father was a prisoner at Camp Ford. The marker inscription was written by Lawrence and Dr. Robert
Glover of Tyler.
