Galveston Preservation
Group Celebrates 125 Years
Galveston Historical Foundation kicked
off a year-long calendar of events celebrating
its 125th anniversary with a reception
and exhibit opening at the Galveston
County Historical Museum on January 12.
The exhibit, "History: Mankind's Beacon
Light," will hang until the end of this year
and is free to the public. The title is taken
from the 1871 seal of the original Galveston
Historical Society.
The presentation examines the Foundation's
evolution from its founding in
1871 as Texas' first historical society
through its incorporation in 1954 as
Galveston Historical Foundation to its current
status as the nation's second largest,
locally-based historic preservation group.

Victoria Previews Historic
Homes During Tour
The "Pride of Place" Historic Homes
Tour, featuring homes in the Original
Townsite Historic District of Victoria will
be held on Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. to 6
p.m., and Sunday, April 21 from noon to 6
p.m. The event is sponsored by Victoria
Preservation Inc.

Foundation Cancels1996 Photography Contest
Due to a lack of response, the Texas
Historical Foundation has elected to cancel
the 1996 Photograph Texas contest andPreservation Weekend Assists Owners
and Managers of Historic PropertiesThe Preservation Weekend activities
in Austin on April 19, 20, and 21 will
provide owners, managers, and those considering
buying a historic property with
information vital to purchasing, restoring,
rehabilitating, and maintaining their
properties. The workshop will demystify
such topics as project financing, applying
for Tax Act credits, and dealing with
historic district commissions.
The three-day preservation education
event will be held at the University of
Texas at Austin campus and is sponsored
by the National Center for Preservationre-evaluate the objectives and organization
of the competition.
According to Ann McDonald of Lubbock,
THF Board member and chair of the
Foundation's Photography Committee,
members of that group will be taking a close
look at the competition to see how it may
be improved. She noted that all entries
received for this year's competition will be
returned, along with fees.
McDonald expressed optimism that a
new and improved version of the photography
contest would emerge next year, and
she encouraged photographers to watch for
details in upcoming issues of this magazine.
Competition Announced For
Design of Houston
Historical Marker
The Rice Design Alliance, the Greater
Houston Preservation Alliance, the City
of Houston Archaeological and Historical
Commission, and the City of Houston
Department of Planning and Development
are co-sponsoring a competition to design
a marker to appropriately recognize and
honor historic buildings, structures, and
sites in the city of Houston. The marker is
intended to reflect the history of Houston,
to be a symbol of its heritage, and to raise
public awareness of the significance of historic
preservation.
Participation is open to any person or
group, and registration for the competition
opens on March 15, 1996, and closes on
May 1. The registration fee per entry is $35.
Submissions are due on May 30. Winners
will be announced at an eventTechnology; the Texas Historical Foundation;
The Texas Historical Commission;
and the School of Architecture,
The University of Texas at Austin.
There will also be opportunities at the
conference to network with others who
share similar interests and people who
can provide services and assistance with
preservation projects.

and former director of the Galveston Historical
Foundation; Vicki McIntosh, chief
financial officer, Spencer Partnership Architects
in Houston; Larry Speck, dean,
School of Architecture, University of Texas
at Austin; Bart Truxillo, chairman, Houston
Archaeological and Historical Commission,
architect, and owner of historic
properties in Houston; and Lorraine Wild,
graphic designer, Reverb in Los Angeles,
and former instructor at the University of
Houston.
Prizes are: first place, $1,000; second
place, $500; third place, $250; and fourth
place, $100. Honorable mentions will be
awarded at the discretion of the jury.
