The Paleoindian burial sites discovered at the
Wilson- Leonard site near Austin are thought to be
nearly 10,000 years old. Wilson Leonard is one of
only four sites of comparable antiquity discovered
in North America, and investigations there have
been hailed as events of major historical and scientific
importance.
Wilson-Leonard is also significant for
the early human burial found there. These
remains can now be confidently dated to
between 10,000 and 9,500 years ago. Remains
of this age have been found at only
about 15 other sites in all of North America,
and most of these are far less complete than
those from the Wilson-Leonard site.
Research continues on the wealth of
data recovered from Wilson-Leonard, and
much is being learned about the peoplewho used the locality and about the conditions
under which they lived. In this
regard, research at the Wilson-Leonard
site epitomizes the intent of the laws and
regulations than mandate investigation of
sites before they are destroyed by publicworks
projects. The interested public is
the benefactor, and in this case, the Texas
Department of Transportation is to be
credited with much of the effort and all of
the funding that brought about this research.Michael B. Collins is an archaeologist with the

WRITTEN RECORDS of history in Texas begin with the accounts
of the Spanish explorers -- less than 500 years ago -- but the first
people came to Texas more than 11,000 years before. The unwritten story of those thousands of years
lies literally buried in the earth.
As Guardians of the Past, it is up to each of us to protect them.
