Heritage Society, WoodvilleRural Communities Get THF Help
At its board meeting in July in
Fredericksburg, the Texas Historical
Foundation Board of Directors
approved two preservation grant
requests-both from smaller, rural
communities.
The Former Texas Rangers
Foundation, in Kerrville, was awarded
a grant to support the Texas Rangers
Memorial Cross Program. That program
researches, identifies, and documents
the burial sites of Texas
Rangers statewide and places a
memorial cross at the resting place of
honored Rangers. Since its inception
in October 1999, the program has
identified and marked 263 Ranger
burial sites with memorial crosses,
and 95 percent of those have been
located in rural Texas.
The Elgin Historical Association
received funds for the purchase of a
digital scanner that will be used to
process EHA's photographic archives,
including the J.O.B. Johnson collection
of historic railroad images.
Johnson spent his life working for the
Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, and these images, among the most
popular at the Elgin Depot Museum,
have brought many railroad aficionados
to the archives.
According to THF President Kelly
Rushing of Houston, the Foundation
has an endowment program that
supports preservation projects
around the state, including the
Jeanne R. Blocker Memorial Fund for
rural preservation in communities of
less than 30,000.
Rushing said, "THF is extremely
happy to partner with the Former
Texas Rangers Foundation and the
Elgin Historical Association to help
carry out this important work. All
three organizations are dedicated to
saving our Texas heritage, and THF is
happy that we can provide funding
for smaller communities where the
resources are often not as plentiful."
For more information about the
THF endowment program, call 512453-2154
or visit www.texashistoricalfoundation.org.
Requests for smaller
grants, generally under $5,000, are
suggested.HERITAGE E SUMMER 2005
