John Phillip Roquemore,
a railroad executive. He

there."
The home stayed in the
Roquemore family until
the 1970s. Jonas says that

When Jonas bought
the home, the interior
i had been painstakingly
restored, so she focused
her efforts on the outside
and on the landscaping.
"We eliminated existing
xeriscaping and tried to
make the yard look the
way that it might have in
the 1900s."
In the year that Jonas has owned the house, she said
that the number of bed and breakfasts in Palestine has
grown, and she expects more interest in the area in
the years to come.
"This town has so much to offer the stressed-out city
dweller who is looking to escape. We are easy to get
to, and in Palestine, people can step back 100 years."
According to Jonas, Palestine has more historic
homes than any other city in Texas, except for
Galveston. She believes that this architectural diversity
was largely due to the railroad being located there
in the town's early days and from the outside influence
of people who serviced that industry, like doctors and
other professionals.
"Today, people are arriving from outside of the
area, and they find the pace of life in Palestine
appealing. You can sit on the porch and not hear
ringing telephones. Things move more slowly. Our
mayor and the city government are very pro-preservation,
so I think that all of these factors will mean
great things for our city in the years to come."Gene
