A YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
The close of the Texas Historical Foundation's fiscal year on
June 30, 2008, serves as the perfect time to reflect on the accomplishments
of the organization. Chief among those achievements
were the following:
* THF conducted a fundraising campaign on behalf of the
MILLARD'S CROSSING HISTORICAL VILLAGE IN NACOGDOCHES
and will turn over a check for more than $12,000 to that organization.* THF funded and produced a video on the GAULT
ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE IN BELL COUNTY that will promote the
groundbreaking work that is being done there and help raise
funds for ongoing research.
* The THF board approved a project to DIGITIZE THE SESSION
LAWS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS for deposit in the University
of North Texas's web site repository, Portals to Texas History,
providing Internet access by the general public and with word
search capability.
* As part of that same project, THF will DIGITIZE ALL VOLUMES
OF HERITAGE MAGAINE, making this archive available
to the general public and researchers through the UNT web site,
Portals to Texas History.
Grants Assist Throughout Texas
Preservation grants continued to be another avenue of THF
support for communities and organizations across the Lone Star
state. Those groups receiving Foundation assistance this year
include:
* THE INSTITUTE OF NAUTICAL ARCHEOLOGY, COLLEGE
STATION. Grant money will be used to publish recent findings at
the site of the shipwreck of the blockade runner the Denbigh, off
the coast of Texas.
* THE FRONTIER TIMES MUSEUM, BANDERA. Funds were
given to this facility to assist in the improvement of exhibition
display area, with special emphasis on artifacts relating to the
Western frontier and its settlers
* FRIENDS OF THE DEPOT, GIDDINGS. Money was awarded
for a tin-stamped ceiling in a historic railroad depot that will be
used as a tourist centerand rest stop.* CULBERSON COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, VAN
HORN. Grant monies were given to replace existing doors in the
Clark Hotel Historical Museum with historically accurate ones.
* THE EAST TEXAS ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL SOCIETY
ATHENS. Funds from THF assisted in the replacement of a floor
in the 1851 dog-trot-style Wofford House.
* THE GRADY MCWHINEY RESEARCH FOUNDATIONS'
ABILENE. This grant helped fund, in part, the publication of the
book, The Illustrated Alamo 1836: A Photographic Journey.
* DEGOLYER LIBRARY, SOUTHERN METHODIST
UNIVERSITY, DALLAS. This grant helped pay for the restoration
of a signifcant portrait of Sam Houston by Texas artist Henry A.
McArdle.
* THE CASTELL COMMUNITY CLUB, CASTELL. Grant assistance
was provided for the restoration and renovation of the Old
Castell School Building so that it could be used as a community
center.
According to Kelly Rushing, of Houston, outgoing president of
THF, these achievements are formidable. "While THF has a very
large board, that group directs a very small staff consisting of one
full-time employee and a part-time staffer. Given our resources, I
think that the Foundation has accomplished much during the
past year, and I am very proud to have been part of those
achievements."
A slate of new officers will take the reins of the organization on
July 1, 2008. Hal Jackson of Dallas, pictured below, was elected as
the new president. Tom Doell, also of Dallas, is the vice president,
and Raymond McDaniel, of Abilene,
will serve as the treasurer.
Houstonite Lamar Douglas is the
incoming secretary, and Kathy
Myers of Dallas will be the assistant
secretary. THF members who wish to
communicate with incoming or outgoing
officers can do so by directing
communication to: P.O. Box 50314,
Austin, Texas 78763, or admin@texashistoricalfoundation.org.HERITAGE Volume 2 2008
