Cattle owners must carefully
consider their long-range plans.
If you rush stock to market
which could be held, you may be
cutting your Income unnecessari-
ly.
A larger part of our cattle
back-log has been wiped out
through gulck marketing than
many persons realize. Over 3 Mi
million more cattle and calves
were slaughtered during the first
six months of 1953 than at the
same time last year. In many
cases, even the foundation herds
of cattlemen have been cut dras
tlcally or eliminated entirely.
There Is always the danger of
going too far. Although the ex<
tremely favored prices of the
last few years may not return
soon, measures are being put
into effect which should add
some strength to the market and
encourage conservation of our
foundation herds.

butter. Place grapefruit on broiler rack 3 Indies from heat. Broil slowly
15 to 20 minutes or until grapefruit is slightly brown and heated through.
Grapefruit may also be unked in a moderately hot oven (400°F.) 15 to

stting cool, but even if you
likely be very little increase In
herd sizes. The long range effect
is expected to help stabilize the
market.
The Blocker's chief problem
will be indetermintng what part
of his herd to seel and what to
keep for continued production.
Growers in the hard-hit areas
should try to hold on to as many
cattle as it is economically feasi-
ble to feed. Those with good pas-
tures, principally in East Texas,
may find this a good time to
buy a few more head, depending
on the size and condition of their
range.
Farm and ranch people have
demonstrated their mettle In
only for the type of aid and re-
lief which could eventually pay
back. With this kind of determi-
nation behind it, our cattle mar-
ket will regain Its solid footing.
