John Maggio and Frank Tamburrino Members of the
Division Band April 1943 Camp Campbell, Kentucky
tirement and getting to attend
the reunions and get to see
some of his old buddies again
and never made it. I am still
caring for him at home. He has
been too good to me to place
him in a nursing home and to
be half-way looked after and to
cost a fortune too.
Christmas card from Julius
"Ed" and Mickey Bernstein
(Div Hq/G-5) notes that he
underwent a Quintuple coron-
ary by-pass which went off like
clockwork on November 30th
and that he was able to leave
the hospital on December 6th.
With his Holiday Greetings,
Clarence Whitefield (Div Hq/
AG) includes a letter wishing
all a Merry Christmas and a
New Year filled with good
health and happiness.
He is really looking forward
to the reunion in Charlotte in
1990 and will be happy to par-
ticipate in the Hospitality Suite
with the 134th and 92nd and
hopes that more of the old Div.
Hq. gang shows up than did
for the reunion in Nashville,
the only one he attended since
the 1947 gathering in New York
City.
The year 1989 has been a
good one for me and my wife,
Jane. I retired in April from
the University of North Car-
olina at Chapel Hill, and since
then have taken on several
volunteer jobs and done some
traveling. We had a delightful
trip to the Canadian Rockies in
August, and then went to
Hawaii last month. All military
retirees (including retired reser-
vists like myself) are elgible to
stay at the Hale Koa Hotel on
Waikiki Beach at Rates sub-
stantially below the other
hotels there, and I strongly
recommend this to any of our
fellow Hellcats who have not
taken advantage of it.
We are going to stay in North
Carolina for the holidays, but
plan a week in Naples, Florida
in late January and early Feb-
ruary - a place we have been
visiting each winter for several
years now. In late February,
we are going to fly to the coast
of Spain and board a cruise
ship through the Straits of
Gibralter to the Canary Islands.
It should be fun, and warm
there, hopefully.
I want to thank you for the
faithful job which you have
done in writing the Division
Headquarters column. I know
that I appreciate it; and others
do, too. I'm looking forward to
seeing you in Charlotte next
August!
Other Christmas cards that
were received and we are most
grateful came from Jimmie
Reese (Div Hq/SS); Luke and
Mary Gallo (66 AIB); HCN
Editor Bob and Betty Head (714
Tank Bn); Stan and Gloria
McCormick (56 AIB); Don Seed-
borg (82nd Med and Pres. U.S.
Section Rhin et DANUBE);
Jerry and Bea McCarthy (66
AIB) and Bill McHugh (494
AFA).
Earl Clifton (Div Hq/CCB)
renews membership and tells
us that he will be enjoying a
cold winter in Montana this
year instead of going to Arizona
where he was hooked and took-
ed last winter.
Charles Eshrich (DivTns)
sends dues and booster and
writes ... I have been a mem-
ber only since March 1988. How-
ever, since then, I have seen a
number of my old buddies and
I can't express the wonderful
feeling of very close friendship
and the recollections experienc-
ed whenever we have gotten
together. I will never be able to
properly thank Paul Hempfling,
my comrades from Trains, for
his persistence in getting me to
join. I resisted, but he won, and
I sure am glad he did. I wish
you all a wonderful, happy,
healthy holiday season. It's
great to be a Hellcat!
Hyman Lippman (Divarty)
sends dues and a note ... I
read in the last issue of the
Hellcat News that Tommy Mad-
dox (493rd AFA) died. "May he
rest in peace". I remember him
well. When I first joined the
493rd AFA - Hq Battery,
Tommy was the drill sergeant.
He showed us our left foot from
right. He made soldiers out of
us draftees. He was firm but
gentle in teaching us how to
become army. I would say he
was very successful. His pass-
ing should not go unnoticed.
Three cheers for Tommy Mad-
dox. May his memory always
be with us ... as a more plea-
sant one ... in the midst of the
unpleasantness of war.
Wilbur T. Dunlavy sends
dues, adds booster and in a note
passes on some most interest-
ing comments on Dr. Brendan
Phibbs' "The Other Side of
Time". He notes ... I finally
got Dr. Phibbs book and have
read it. As a whole it is a pretty
good account of our part in the
war. I thought the Colonel de-
served a little better if he was
the same Colonel for whom I
drove a half track C.P. He was
a real army man and did what
he had to do and dreaded those
attacks upon attacks. He was a
great guy.
The book rally hit the nail on
the head on the drinking. I
always said liquor played a big
part in winning the war. I know
it gave me courage. As for the
dirty language, they tell me late
night cable T.V. is worse. I
enjoyed the book. Merry Christ-
mas and Happy New Year. It's
great to be a Hellcat.
James Reed (Div Hq/G-4)
sends dues with booster and
informs us that he continues to
be active in the Lions Club.
This is his 36th consecutive
year in Lionism. This year they
have assigned him as a Zone
Chairman and being kept very
busy.
Paul Beutel, Ex Tech Sgt and
Personnel Sgt Major - 119
Engineer Bn sends along some
very interesting information re-
garding the Billy Conn affair
that we kicked around back in
June. At that time we were
trying to determine the length
of service Billy did with Divis-
ion Special Service and later
with the 119th Engineers before
being 'engineered' out of the
division. Paul clears the
mystery of his time with Special
Service by sending a copy of
Special Orders #134 that were
cut on 4 June 1943 at Camp
Campbell, KY. These orders has
Billy being transferred to the
engineers effective 7 June 1943.
Paul writes ... In my 201 file
was a Division Special Order
that sent me to school at Fort
Knox, KY and that same order
transferred him from Hq (RE-
SS) 12th Armd Div to the 119th
